The Tech Skills For Music Teachers Digital Badge Project will allow music teachers to earn digital badges to showcase tech skills and knowledge they have acquired.

Digital badges—also known as micro-credentials—give you the freedom to choose what you learn. Each badge is verified, embedded with linked evidence and they are meant to be shared!

The growing collection of Midnight Music digital badges will cover music-specific tech skills such as how to digitise your sheet music, how to split the tracks of an audio file, simple audio editing, understanding music file types, or creating rhythmic patterns. But it will also include those general tech skills that you always wished you knew - like exactly what to do when a website is not working, how to record your screen with great sound quality, how to create your own GIFs or how to make QR codes that play audio and video files.

This is professional development done differently and it’s suitable for ALL music teachers!

When is the Tech Skills For Music Teachers Digital Badge Project?
It is available now inside the Midnight Music Community. As soon as you sign up for the membership, you will have direct access. You’ll even be able to vote on which badges are prioritised or suggest ideas for new badges.

How can I access the Digital Badge Project?
The Tech Skills For Music Teachers Digital Badge Project is available inside the Midnight Music Membership Community.

How do these digital badges work?
There will be a list of available badges and you can choose the topic/s that you would like to learn. You’ll click through to the information page to find the criteria and evidence needed to earn the badge, and these will be a link to submit your project. Your submission will be assessed and if it meets all of the criteria you’ll be issued with the badge.  Badges can then be displayed in a variety of locations - such as your email signature, on social media, on your LinkedIn profile or on your resume.

You’ll even be able to earn badges (and the recognition!) for skills you ALREADY have.

What kind of evidence will I need to submit?
Each badge will have a checklist of tasks for you to complete and will explain what type of evidence is required. This will vary from badge to badge!  Evidence formats include the following (you’ll usually only submit one type per badge):

  • a link to a presentation file
  • a link to a design (such as a Canva link)
  • a document you created
  • a screencast recording that shows you know how to navigate a software application
  • a screencast recording that demonstrates a music project that you created
  • a screen shot image that shows what you created on a website
  • an audio file

What are the benefits of earning digital badges?
Digital badges are “quick wins” and achievements that you can show to the world. You can focus on a single skill to learn and avoid the overwhelm that often accompanies a long, multiple-module course.

Digital badges represent learning outcomes, experiences, competencies or achievements valued by employers and are a great addition to your resume, social media pages and professional profiles such as LinkedIn.

Many badges will also be a “taster” for more in-depth training and courses. See if you like it and want to learn more!

What is the time commitment for earning each badge?
This will vary depending on the badge type, the evidence requirements and whether you have any prior skills or knowledge in that area already.  Some badges will be quick - around 30 minutes (maybe less!) and others may require an hour or two of learning before you’re able to create and submit your evidence.

Who are these digital badges for?
These digital badges are for ALL types of music teachers - elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, general music, music therapists, private studio teachers and ensemble leaders.

Do I need to watch tutorials or attend online training at a specific time?
No - all the information and requirements for digital badges are accessible ANY time. There are no hard deadlines and all learning materials are available in the Midnight Music Community.

Can I get a professional development certificate?
While this will not ordinarily earn you a PD certificate, you will earn verified digital badges to showcase your tech skills and knowledge designed to be shared with your admin, colleagues or prospective employers.
